A Google Insights search popularity analysis on the Chinese Communist Party slogan  “Scientific View of Development”

Who has been busy with homework from propaganda campaigns lately?  Would you guess the Tibetans, the Uighurs and other minorities?  A search tool that compares search volumes from Google says you’re right!  In this case the searches are on “scientific view of development” a favorite of Chinese Communist Party Secretary Hu Jintao that will go down somewhere in history next to Jiang Zemin’s Three Stresses 三讲.

The broad wave pattern for the past 90 days  (see graph pictured above) seems to hint that people don’t do their propaganda homework on weekends (???).  (Perhaps government and party cadres in the Tibetan Autonomous Region suggested one professor since the cadres  have a high relative number of computers in the TAR.) If they are cheating on their homework, they may need to make a report of their ideological condition to the nearest Party member (huibao sixiang 汇报思想 http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=%E6%B1%87%E6%8A%A5%E6%80%9D%E6%83%B3&cmpt=q if that is true.

Or perhaps people are furiously cutting and pasting students essays across the land. Google analysis might pick that up too.  Some professors at U.S. universities use high tech anti-cheating computer tools, one would hope that the Party would not be far behind in catching people who cheat on tests.

A broader search 2004 – 2009
www.google.com/insights/search/#q=%e7%a7%91%e5%ad%a6%e5%8
shows that these searches in November – December 2008 peaked a four times their average volume for 2004 – 2008.  Google Insights for Search is an experimental tool that examines relative search volumes on a term and related searches.  It can give your results by provinces or even by a cities if the search volume is high enough. It can also give you results on related searches and search trends.

Well if I had to write my propaganda campaign essay, I’d look up the right answer online.  Low grades and you’re a splittist.

Nothing to draw conclusions from, but it can hint at trends and help you generate hypotheses that you can then check out by more searches and extensive reading.   If you hit the link below, you should get something similar, though the months searched will vary (this is a last 90 days search, so results can vary) so the picture will likely look similar but not exactly the same as mine.
